Onsted Community Schools - Greening the Next Generation

Posted by Kelly Weger on 14 Dec 2009
Onsted, MI, December 2009 -- Energy Works Michigan, a non-profit organization, is pleased to announce that Onsted Community School has been accepted to the Michigan Renewable Schools Program! Onsted will be receiving a 1kW Solar PV awning as well as a 2.4kW Wind Turbine installed at Onsted High School.

Onsted Community School has placed a high priority on green initiatives: student recycling projects, energy conservation measures, local purchasing, and other Green Team projects. Participating in the Michigan Renewable Schools Program will help Onsted as they work towards long range facilities plans, including becoming a LEED certified Green School, possible Geothermal HVAC upgrades, water saving plumbing fixtures, and investigating future solar water heaters.

At a preliminary site visit with Energy Works and the contractor, Mechanical Energy Systems, Mark Haag, Onsted Superintendent, was thrilled at the chance to educate his students about these two types of renewable energy. The solar photovoltaic panels will be attached to an awning outside the physics classroom, where students will learn about the importance of clean energy generation. The wind turbine will be on a monopole in a parking island. Both will be visible to residents driving past the community school as well as a new weather station.

Go Wildcats!
