Summer 2011 Interns
Katherine Knapp - Intern, is a senior undergraduate student at the University of Michigan. She is majoring in Program in the Environment with an Urban Planning concentration and a minor in Scandinavian Studies. Katherine is a Graham Institute Undergraduate Sustainability Scholar, serves as a student advisor on the Division of Student Affairs Sustainability Committee, and is currently working on an honors thesis centered on technology’s influence on bus culture in Ann Arbor. Her interests in applied sustainability were generated during a semester abroad in Uppsala, Sweden, where she began to investigate the practice of public transportation as a living symbol of Swedish national identity. For Energy Works, she will be assisting in the analysis of collected data regarding best practices for increased energy conservation and efficiency in Michigan schools. Following graduation, she plans on attending graduate school for Urban Planning with the intention of focusing on transportation and international planning.
Melanie Kruvelis - Intern, is a sophomore undergraduate student at the University of Michigan, concentrating in Spanish and Program in the Environment. She plans on transferring to the School of Public Policy at U of M, to further study the policies behind the environmental movement. Melanie has enjoyed working as an editorial page editor for The Michigan Daily, and administering arts-related events on campus through her work as a Program Assistant for Arts at Michigan. In her free time, she likes to kayak and emulate Tina Fey. She is excited to foster sustainability in Michigan schools through Energy Works, where she will be promoting energy literacy through researching and developing energy efficiency-focused curriculum guides that will be used in schools across the state.
