St. Clair County RESA: Alternative Energies for the 21st Century

Posted by Natalie Young on 20 Dec 2010
St. Clair County RESA (Regional Education Service Agency) is known for offering innovative educational enrichment programs and career and technical education opportunities for seven member districts. They were among the first to install a geothermal heating and cooling system on campus, and have also implemented extensive energy conservation efforts resulting in a significant 10% reduction in energy usage across campus.

In August 2010, The Great Lakes Maritime Center welcomed the installation of a 10kW wind turbine and 1.5 kW solar photovoltaic array. They have since produced enough energy to power 144 days of electrical usage in an average American house.

The video Alternative Energies for the 21st Century explains how St. Clair County RESA plans to educate students about the importance of renewable energy with these systems.
Energy production and weather information collected from the data logger and weather station will be available in science classes and for all St. Clair County Schools.

This data is available online for students to compare the data collected at their school to similar data streams from other Michigan schools participating in the Renewable Energy Program.
