Detroit -- New solar panels are to be installed on the roof of Cass Technical High School in a move that will save on energy costs while giving students an opportunity to see how solar technology works.

The panels, which were moved to the school today, should be installed in the next two weeks. The collected energy will be used to reduce energy costs at the school.

District officials expect the panels to save nearly $90,000 in energy costs over 25 years.

"This is a very exciting step for the district as we transform schools to more efficient and renewable energy consumption," said Mark Schrupp, executive director of the district's physical plant operations and capitol improvements.

Cass received a $75,000 grant from Energy Works Michigan and Motor City Electric company. The district had to come up with another $75,000 to pay for the panels.

Students in classes on the upper floors of Cass will be able to look down through windows on the array of panels, district officials said.
